QATAR ECONOMY JUMPS BACK WITH NEW TRADE ROUTES

  • Qatar moved quickly to safeguard its economy after the Middle East cut diplomatic and transport ties with Doha.
  • The boycott disrupted imports and triggered the withdrawal of billions of dollars of deposits from Qatari banks. But it developed new trade routes.
  • The Gulf Arab state’s economy has largely recovered from the boycott and is again one of the region’s fastest-growing.
  • Qatar’s food sales is to witness a compound annual growth rate of 14.4% in the upcoming years leading to 2020.

HOW PAKISTAN BENEFITED POST QATAR BLOCKADE

  • Pakistan has recorded a 64% surge in exports to Qatar since 2017.
  • The value of the potential market and opportunity available for Pakistan is over $1billion.
  • Pakistan’s major exports to Qatar include rice, red meats, fresh fruits, vegetables, cotton and fabric of all types, leather and all its articles, cereal straw and husk, and fish and its products in FY 2017.
  • Some of the Pakistani products “successfully introduced” in the Qatari market since the blockade include Frozen Food, Milk, Cream and Ghee, biscuits and candies, packaging material, ketchup and juices for the hospitality sector, steel piping products, electrical cables, mayonnaise, and sugar.
  • A Qatari shipping company Milaha is set to launch what is called the fastest direct service between Doha and Karachi, decreasing the transit days and shipping costs by more than 30 percent.
  • Qatar lifted visa requirements for citizens of 80 countries including Pakistan.
  • Pakistan’s logistic advantage and international position gives it a competitive advantage not rivalled by any other country in the region.
